What's Included (And What's Not)
Studio rates are rarely just "the room." Here's what to ask about:
Usually Included
- Room rental (obviously)
- Basic equipment โ monitors, mics, cables
- DAW software (Pro Tools, Logic, etc.)
- Basic refreshments (water, maybe coffee)
Sometimes Included, Sometimes Extra
- Engineer: Some studios include a house engineer. Others charge $30-75/hr on top. Always ask.
- Premium microphones: Standard mics are included. Vintage Neumanns or specialty mics might be extra ($25-100/session).
- Outboard gear: Analog compressors, preamps, effects โ premium studios include these, budget studios may not have them.
- Mixing: Recording and mixing are typically separate services. Don't assume your hourly rate includes a final mix.
Almost Always Extra
- Mixing: $150-1,500 per song depending on complexity and engineer
- Mastering: $50-300 per song
- Session musicians: $100-500+ per player per session
- Production: If you need a producer, that's a separate arrangement entirely
What Each Tier Gets You
Budget Studios ($30-80/hr)
A treated room, decent mic, DAW, and either a basic engineer or self-service recording. The room might be a converted bedroom, garage, or small commercial space. Quality varies wildly โ some budget studios sound great because the engineer has golden ears. Others sound like you recorded in a closet (because you literally did).
Best for: Demos, songwriting sessions, podcast recording, artists who bring their own engineer.
Mid-Range Studios ($75-250/hr)
Professional acoustic treatment, quality mic selection, experienced engineers, comfortable environment. This is where most commercially released independent music is recorded. The rooms sound good, the gear is solid, and the engineers know what they're doing.
Best for: Singles, EPs, albums. This is the sweet spot for independent artists who want professional quality without premium pricing.
Premium Studios ($200-800/hr)
World-class acoustics, vintage and modern gear collections worth hundreds of thousands, top-tier engineers, and an experience designed to inspire. These rooms have hosted platinum records. The sound quality ceiling is higher, but the law of diminishing returns kicks in.
Best for: Signed artists, high-budget projects, songs that need specific acoustic character, mixing and mastering.
How to Get the Most Out of Your Studio Budget
1. Come Prepared
Every minute you spend in the studio figuring out lyrics, arrangements, or production ideas is money you're burning. Write and rehearse at home. Have your session plan ready. Know which songs you're tracking, in what order, and what you need for each one.
2. Book the Right Amount of Time
General rule of thumb for recording vocals:
- 1 song (vocals only, beat already done): 2-4 hours
- 1 song (tracking + rough mix): 4-6 hours
- EP (5 songs, vocals only): 2-3 days
- Album (10-12 songs): 5-10 days depending on complexity
3. Don't Pay for Prestige You Don't Need
A $500/hr studio won't make a mediocre song great. And a $40/hr studio won't ruin a great song if the engineer knows their craft. Match the studio to the project, not your ego.
4. Build a Relationship with One Studio
Regular clients almost always get better rates, priority booking, and extra perks. Find a studio you like and become their loyal customer. It pays off long-term.
5. Consider Off-Peak Hours
Tuesday morning sessions are cheaper than Saturday nights at many studios. If your schedule is flexible, ask about off-peak pricing.
